Redeemer versus The Beast

A cracking race looms on Saturday night with Victorian My Redeemer and Beast Unleashed (NSW) joint $2.80 favourites to win the Group 1 Peter Mosman Classic (520m) at Wentworth Park.

My Redeemer (David Geall), the recent Group 1 Harrison-Dawson (515m) winner at Sandown Park, is in a rich vein of form, while Beast Unleashed (Jodie Lagogiane), a greyhound bred in Victoria by Alan Ferguson, won the Group 2 Launching Pad at Sandown Park in April.

Two semi-finals were conducted on the weekend, with My Redeemer clocking 29.64sec, three lengths superior to Beast Unleashed, who won the other semi in 29.82sec.

The box draw sees My Redeemer drawn awkwardly in box five and Beast Unleashed in box three.

“Everything has gone right for him in this series so far,” trainer David Geall said of My Redeemer. “He was the fastest heat winner and the fastest semi-final winner, he’s a good traveller and I’m just hoping he gets a clear run.  Being drawn in box 5 lessens his chances of avoiding interference, but he is as strong as they come.”

While My Redeemer does his best work at the finish of his races, Beast Unleashed relies on his early speed to put him in a winning position.

“Beast Unleashed has brilliant early box speed, so hopefully he can find the early lead and then My Redeemer will have to do the chasing,” said trainer Jodie Lagogiane.

My Redeemer isn’t the only Victorian-trained greyhound to make the Peter Mosman Classic final, with Chief’s Empire (Darren Brown), who is an excellent beginner, to exit box 6 at odds of around $4.40.
