BALLARAT CUP: Girls, girls!

Who runs the world? Girls, Girls. Like the great Beyonce hit of 2011, five greyhounds are set to conquer the 2016 Group Two Energis Ballarat Cup with four female trainers qualifying runners in Ballarat’s biggest race in their calendar.

Brooke Ennis (pictured below) is the only trainer to have two representatives in the $110,000 feature run over the 450 metre distance, in Judicial Man and Zinzan Brooke who happen to be from the same litter.

26-year-old Samantha Ferguson has her first Ballarat Cup runner in Tiggerlong Cruz and 25-year-old Ashlee Terry trains American Monster who is hoping to finally claim a country cup after a close second in the Shepparton Cup in September.

Prominent Anakie trainer Andrea Dailly qualified Diego Bale, who is also competing in his first country cup in his 73rd start.

“Greyhound racing is now a very equal sport which is why I love training greyhounds,” Brooke Ennis explained.
Sam Ferguson has been training greyhounds for just 17 months and was surprised at the support she received from other trainers as she was starting out.

“There is no stigma attached to being a female in this sport, we all work hard and I think because everyone does, no one seems to question it,” Sam Ferguson explained.

It’s an amazing achievement and credit to how far the sport has come to have four prominent female trainers line up in the richest country cup Victoria greyhound racing has to offer.

“It’s exciting to have a large female presence in greyhound racing, especially in big races like the Ballarat Cup,” Ashlee Terry said.

Last year Anakie trainer Angela Langton took out the Group Two Ballarat Cup with Shared Equity.
