READY 2 RACE: Lucky in Love

GRV’s Ready 2 Race concept reached an all-time high today at Bendigo with Lucky (pictured) selling for a record $31,000.

Warrnambool owners Walter and Leanne Love made the purchase, and they look forward to racing the 22 month old son of Bit Chili and Classy Bling, who won his heat on Saturday in 23.81sec (Best) and his final on Thursday in 24.01sec.

“He’ll leave Bendigo with us tonight and we have some idea who will train him but we just have to confirm it,” Walter said.

Leanne said the pair had raced a small number of greyhounds over the years, and always have their greyhounds’ future beyond the racetrack at front of mind.

“Every greyhound we own finds a home, and if we don’t keep Lucky ourselves once he retires from racing we will find someone to adopt him or place him in the Greyhound Adoption Program,” she said.

“We recently placed another of our greyhounds, Snow Boots, into GAP and have a couple of pet female greyhounds at home. They’re such beautiful animals.”

Some of the other highest priced sales on the day included Bill ($16,000), Zelemar Roo ($15,250), Lexie ($14,500) and Bumble Bee Bolto ($11,000).

A ‘night’ was held this evening, which was restricted to the fastest heat winners out of last weekend’s heats, while the remaining greyhounds were on sale at a ‘day’ auction this afternoon.
Race caller James Van de Maat was MC at both auctions, and he said there were a number of potential bargain buys.
“There were plenty of quality greyhounds for sale today fetching the high bids that they deserve, and there will be a lot of happy owners who will have a lot of fun over the next 12 months to two years racing their greyhounds.”
“There were also a number of greyhounds that I think could end up proving to be steals today, including Swift Damien, who sold for around $1,400, Zelemar Roo at $15,250 and Sam, who went for $3,500,” Van de Maat said.
Only one greyhound was passed in at tonight’s auction, with the evening session totalling $269,400 in sales. The day auction attracted $85,100 in sales, taking total money spent by purchasers to $354,500.
