CODE OF PRACTICE
In a large and dynamic industry such as greyhound racing, it is vital to have strategic and practical guidance that helps ensure high standards, community confidence and sustainability in both the short and long term.
The Victorian Government’s Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds (the Code) provides key function for the Victorian greyhound industry. The Code sets out minimum standards for the care, and management of racing greyhounds throughout their life cycle, focusing on areas such as staffing, accommodation, breeding, and care. The Code also includes requirements for exercise, socialisation, and enrichment for different classes of greyhounds.
Additionally, the Code provides minimum standards for breeding, husbandry, record-keeping, movement, transfer, and sale of greyhounds. Compliance with the Code is mandatory for anyone who keeps racing greyhounds, with penalties applicable for non-compliance.
Enforced by Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) in conjunction with the Rules of Racing, the Code came into force on 1 January 2020. It was a key recommendation from Victoria’s Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr Charles Milne, following his investigation into the illegal and cruel behaviour to greyhounds by a small group of racing participants.
One of the main focuses of the Code is to outline the requirements of Establishment and Health Management Plans (EHMP), which provide the standards for the education, keeping and treatment of greyhounds as they prepare for and commence racing training.
