North-East Wrap: Saturday Night Disco

Welcome along to this week’s edition of the weekly North-East Wrap. After what has been a busy few weeks in the area last week was quieter as we build towards the Northern Districts Cup at Shepparton in two weeks’ time.

Racing for the week kicked off at Healesville last Thursday where we were on the come down from their big Derby and Oaks meeting the previous Sunday. Still it was good competitive racing and there were a number of impressive winners including the very fast Hardaway Law in Race 7, jumping right on the lure he sizzled up the straight in a fastest of the day 19.26 beating Tangible and Major Talent. Here is a replay of his win (Replay).

The Free For All (Race 8) was a keenly contested affair with any one of about 5 looking a chance midrace. As it turned out the judge couldn’t separate Encee Eye Gibbs (4) and I’m Pumped (2), a nose away in 3rd place was Dozer Tron (3). (Replay)

Other good winners included Splash Of White in race 5, Awesome Fear in Race 6 who both lead all of the way in good time and Ketuts Kaput who was able to wear down Aerial Blitz late in Race 10.

Racing last Friday and Saturday went to Bendigo in the Goldfields where good line ups were assembled, Friday’s program was decimated by late scratchings when Nicole Davis endured a breakdown on the way to the track so this had a big effect on field sizes.

Certainly the most impressive win on Fridays Card was the Brooke Ennis trained Deadly Vane, this guy who has won 18 of 36 jumped away well from the inside box and from that point it was a procession, he had just been slightly off his game but Fridays certainly showed that he was getting back to his best. He flew around Bendigo in 27.90. Here is the dominant win of Deadly Vane. (Replay)

Other strong winners of Friday were Kraken Brad in Race 4 who was dominant going all the way, Premier Hawk in race 6 who scored at big odds but did it in grand style winning easily and Daphne’s Party who romped in the last.

Over to Saturday and easily the standout performance belonged to that of Disco Rain (pictured above) in the last event. Resuming after doing a Monkey Muscle this guy, who is part owned by Trainer Ian Garland along with AFL footballers Stewart Crameri from the Western Bulldogs and Mick Hurley from Essendon, jumped like a rocket from the inside and the further the race went on the better he got.

Lightly raced he has now won 6 of 9 but on his performance Saturday night where he ran 23.65 he will be winning better races (Replay). He will strip fitter for the run and really the sky is his limit over the next 12 months or so. He is one to follow for sure.

Other winners of Note included Speedy Beat for Kelly Bravo in the first, Sir Charleton in Race 2 and Rip It in Race 9 who was right on his game winning well.

The final meeting for the week was conducted at Shepparton last night where the Auld kennel dominated the card training 3 winners with Tanya getting 2 winners and Jimmy 1, they were all impressive too. Their first win for the night came up in Race 3 where Rum Island came from well off the pace midrace and produced a big finish to run over the top of his rivals, he hasn’t quite learned what racing is about yet but when he does he is going to be some dog.

Their 2nd win of the night was All Courage in Race 7, he relished being drawn in Box 8 which allowed him clear running in the early stages to get to 2nd past the first turn, he had some work to do into the straight but he hit the line hard to win in good time as well. The last of the Auld treble was Soda Lad in the last leg of the Quaddie Race 8. On paper it looked a race between him and Hawka Tron, once he began so quickly and lobbed it front it was game over, he gave a strong kick turning and powered clear late to win easily in the best of the night 25.20. (Replay)

That wraps up racing from the North East this week. I’ll be back with a preview of the Northern Districts heats which will be conducted at Shepparton next Monday Night. Until then take care, good luck and good punting.
