Metro Wrap: Not Even Magic Could Separate Them

When a Secret Spell was cast at The Meadows on Saturday night it took the might of Merlin the Magician (Emrys) to close the gap as the pair of talented greyhounds crossed the finish line in tandem for a rare metropolitan dead heat, James Van de Maat reports.

Another great week of metropolitan greyhound racing was conducted with some pretty impressive wins through the 48 metro races held.

Wednesday racing from The Meadows provided some very nice wins, but I separated two runs apart from the rest.

Callum’s Mum began brilliantly in the $10,000+ prize money sixth on the program with a super 34.38 all of the way win.. With a clean beginning we we’re able to see the Ray Drew trained chaser at her best with a fine win. (Replay)

The other I was impressed by was Aston Pearson who resumed from a long break handling box seven to perfection in her 30.09 win. (Replay)

The Thursday night meeting from Sandown Park was highlighted by a few smart runs. Shanlyn Lucy recorded a super strong Grade 5 win in the stayers race running a top line 41.78, smashing the recent Group 1 placed Love Affair by over 6 lengths. The daughter of Radley Bale raced by the Houndog syndicate, prepared by Amy Lauterboom seems to have the ability to match it with the top liners of the staying ranks in the not too distant future. (Replay)

No Diggity produced a faultless performance winning heat two of the ‘Peter Rocket Damsels Dash’ in slick style leading all of the way in a dominant 29.49 win. (Replay)

Some of the other smart wins included the breathtaking run home Angie Rocks winning in 29.52 after being moderately away once again and also Fixate who took his good provincial form to town, winning the last in 29.53.

The Meadows lit up under lights Saturday night and the feature race didn’t disappoint. With a hot field of sprinters and middle distance chasers, we we’re set for a terrific clash for the ‘Sky Racing Grade 5 Final’. The two favourites fought the race out as Secret Spell went out to an early lead, but Emrys (which is the first name of Merlin the Magician) got in to the clear nice and early chasing hard only 4 lengths off the lead at the end of the back straight. When the judge called a hault at the end of the 600m trip there was nothing between the pair, dead heating in 34.462. (Replay)

Mepunga Tiara had the time honours over the 600m running 34.26, whilst Sonic Dash returned a best of the night for the sprint in 29.89.

This wraps up the weekly wrap!
