Important Change to the Grading of Victorian Greyhound Races

As Greyhound Racing Victoria’s Racing Department announced in May 2014, members are advised of an important change to the grading of greyhounds in Victoria that will come into effect later this month.

The change involves the introduction of Grade 6 and Grade 7, which are designed to afford greyhounds with the opportunity to experience more success (wins) before having to compete at Grade 5 level.

The changes are as follows:

Greyhounds that win their way out of maiden class and would normally become a Grade 5  but will now become a Grade 7.

Once a greyhound wins a race as a Grade 7, it will become a Grade 6. Grade 6 greyhounds will have won no more than one race outside of Maiden Grade (excluding Qualifying Heats).

Greyhounds can no longer compete at Grade 6 or Grade 7 level once they have won in that grade.

Once greyhounds become Grade 5 the current grading principles still apply.

GRV Racing Manager Scott Robins believes GRV members will embrace the new initiative.

“Research tells us that jumping from maiden class into Grade 5 company can be a steep climb for greyhounds, as they often find themselves drawn against greyhounds with a lot more experience than they have.”

“The introduction of these new grades will allow greyhounds that have only won in maiden class to compete only against each other (Grade 7), and those with one win outside of maiden grade will also only be able to compete against each other (Grade 6),” Robins said.

“Trainers are encouraged to nominate their greyhounds as they normally would and GRV will schedule Grade 6 and Grade 7 races based on the number of nominations.”

“While there initially won’t be any advertised events for Grade 6 and 7, as is the case with Grade 5 races there certainly will be the chance to compete in heats and finals of Grade 6 and 7 races in the near future.”

Members will be pleased to know that Grade 6 and 7 races will compete for Grade 5 prize money.

Note: There will be no non-penalty Grade 6 or Grade 7 races, however non-penalty conditions will still apply to specified Grade 5 races.
