Planning is imperative when buying a pup

Karen Leek is one of Victoria’s most respected greyhound racing participants, having had plenty of success as a breeder, trainer and commercial rearer.

Highly respected greyhound racing all-rounder Karen Leek is enjoying the fruits of a talented litter she bred in mid-2015 sired by Djays Octane out of Lady Deedee.

The litter of six has produced five winners, four of which are trained by Leek. The best of them is Trouper, who won the 2018 Horsham Cup Consolation (485m), along with talented stayers Sir Jay Jay and Lady Ceecee plus Savannah Ash, who has won at Sandown Park in the impressive time of 29.67sec.

Based in Devon Meadows, Leek also has an outstanding reputation as a commercial rearer, having reared my champions in years gone by including Brokenwood, Godsend, Moreira and Nolen along with present-day stars Bewildering and Extreme Magic.

“Rearing is such an integral part of a greyhound’s life and can be the difference between winning races and not making it to the racetrack at all.”

Speaking on SEN’s The Sporting Capital last month, Leek told listeners that anyone thinking about purchasing a greyhound pup should first organise a reputable rearer.

“If you’re going to buy a pup and you’ve got your eye on a litter, try to find someone to rear your pup before you purchase it,” Leek said. “it’s important you don’t have it reared by just anyone because the rearing phase is such an integral part of a greyhound’s life and can be the difference between winning races and not making it to the racetrack at all. Speak to people that are successful and ask where they get their pups reared, and go from there.”

Booking an educator to break-in your pup is something you may also want to do well in advance, as there can be a 12 month waiting list in some instances.
