Metro Wrap: Nationals Fever hits Melbourne

The nation’s best have clashed searching for a chance to represent the Big V in the Nationals at Sydney’s Wentworth Park later this month (Aug 22).  With five heats for the sprinters held at Sandown Park Thursday and two heats for the stayers conducted at The Meadows Saturday, we were treated to a sensational week of metropolitan greyhound racing.

.
Firstly we wind the clock back to the mid week Meadows meeting on Wednesday. Early in the meeting we witnessed some impressive wins including West On Xandi in 30.39 for Kristie Collyer (Replay) and also Dublin Bull, who dominated to 600m novice from the front, running 34.63 (Replay).
.
Group 1 Australian Cup finalist from earlier this year Samus Allen bounced back to some top form with a speedy 30.11 win (Replay) in the seventh whilst Greysynd Emma set the time standard for the day in the last with a commanding two and a half length win in 30.07 for Michael Chilcott (Replay).

Thursday night at Sandown Park was highlighted by the five fantastic heats of the nationals. No doubt all eyes were on the flying Fernando Bale, who parcelled up yet another win in the first heat holding off a gallant Kayda Shae by just over a length in a controlled 29.34 (Replay).
.
Brooke Ennis had another top night out with Margins (pictured) winning the third heat from off the tempo in 29.60 (Replay). His run in the Group 1 Maturity was as good as any and he looks set to have a very good few months, possibly over a shade more ground. Brooke also put the polish on a potential superstar of the game in the maiden final, Sulzanti, who destroyed his rivals in an explosive 29.34 (Replay).
.
The other of the heat winners were Ronray Spirit in 29.60 (Replay), Lamia Bale in 29.75 (Replay) and Weston East in 29.62 (Replay).

Saturday night at The Meadows was oh so sweet for one great stayer. Sweet It Is was exactly that in heat one of the Victorian National stayers with a devastating 42.27 win by 11 lengths. Australia’s highest prize money earner lobbed second in the early part of the race, which would had to have been the closest to the lead in the early part we have seen from this super stayer (Replay).
.
The other heat was quite the messy race with plenty of trouble throughout. Shall She Rock snuck home to defeat the fast finishing Love Affair in a moderate 43.36 (Replay)
.
Others who caught my eye on Saturday included Blazin’ Bomber, who continued the boom start to his career with a breathtaking 29.60 win over the 525m (Replay), and also Midnight Ride, who smashed his rivals in the grade five final with a dominant nine length win in 29.89 (Replay).

The metro racing came to an end for another week at Sandown Park on Sunday, in which the highlight for mine was the gutsy win of Ponting’s Nail in the third of the day. Even though this young chaser didn’t run the arms off the clock (29.81), I was still impressed with his finishing burst late and I’m of the opinion he could turn into a very handy city class 500m+ dog (Replay).
