Matt backs Winner with Pickering

AS a lifelong diehard Geelong fan, there’s no person better to own a greyhound with than club legend Liam Pickering.

At least, that’s what we’re claiming anyway.

So when Warrnambool local Matt Holcombe won the Off the Bench Dr Who Survivor Quiz recently, choosing Pickers’ syndicate was a natural move.

“I’m a Geelong man, I’ve always been a Geelong fan, so it was a pretty easy choice for me … I actually like Pickers!” Holcombe laughed.

“I followed Pickers pretty closely back in the day, he was a bit of a favourite of mine.”

Holcombe became the ninth winner of the Quiz this week to own a ten per cent share in a greyhound pup.

“I’m looking forward to it, it will be great to be involved in it, it will certainly open up a new world to me, so I can’t wait,” Holcombe said.

For Holcombe, being part of Pickers’ team will be a nice change of luck, after being unable to play sport since the age of 14 when he broke his back.

He made a return to the field last year for a game of cricket at the age of 29, his first match back since the injury.

“I used to play footy, I broke my back when I was about 14, so I had to give away sport then unfortunately,” Holcombe said.

“I haven’t played sport since then, apart from last year I came back and played a little bit of cricket.

“That was the first time I’ve played since I was a little kid. So I’m 29 now – it was a long time to be out of it.

“It was my first ever game of cricket too – I took two wickets so I was pretty happy with that to be honest.”

After several unsuccessful attempts at winning the Off the Bench Dr Who Survivor Quiz, Holcombe was finally able to have a change of luck and saluted this week.

“I’ve called up a couple of times before, got a couple of questions right a few times, but I’ve missed out on all the other times I’ve tried,” he said.

“Luckily enough, I guessed my first answer on Saturday and got it right, and then all the ones after that I actually knew all the answers to.”
