Rob Britton has unearthed another star greyhound from across the ditch, with former New Zealander Above All producing a stunning run on his Australian debut at Sandown last Sunday.
Above All won in a time of 29.332 seconds after encountering early trouble to win the RSN – Racing & Sport (1-5 wins heat) and will take his place in the final from box four this Thursday night at the Springvale venue.
Britton famously brought over Clone Your Own from New Zealand and the Lara trainer guided him to victory in the 2013 Group 2 Harrison-Dawson in just his sixth Australian start. Above All is owned by the same connections and they believe he is just as good.
Rob says the relationship he has formed with owners Merv and Allison O’Brien is one that he values.
“Merv and Allison came over last year and were looking for a kennel to place Clone Your Own,” he said
“After visiting my kennel they let me know they wanted me to train him and that’s where the relationship started and it’s a great relationship.
“With Clone Your Own going back to New Zealand they let me know that they have another dog just as good as him and since I’ve had him I’ve said ‘I think you’re right.”
Britton says that Above All needs to work on his box manners but they may improve as he matures.
“I’ve had him for about six weeks now and if there is a knock on him it would be his box manners, he hasn’t shown great box speed yet.
“I think he’s got improvement. His improvement will come with box manners and I have no doubt there’s a couple of tenths (tenths of seconds improvement) up his sleeve.
“Some dogs work out their trade and develop with maturity and I hope he is the same.”
With Clone Your Own now back in New Zealand and set to embark on a stud career, Above All will ensure that Britton’s kennel still has a talented kiwi for the foreseeable future.
