ANOTHER TRACK RECORD FOR BLACK MAGIC OPAL

Black Magic Opal (pictured) added another track record to his CV when recording 25.65sec at Hobart last night, his ninth win in succession.

Contesting one of six heats of the Group 1 Hobart Thousand, the Jason Thompson-trained greyhound won by around 10 lengths over Elite Devil.

The track record was held by Bergermeister in 25.71sec, which was set in 2011.

Black Magic Opal has also broken track records at Geelong (twice) and Warrnambool as well as Sandown’s first section record.

Sadly, Black Magic Opal’s heat win spelled the end of a sensational career for local star Rewind, who finished fourth, with trainer Morris Strickland declaring during the week that this would be his final campaign. He retires after 61 wins from 101 starts.

Three other Victorian-trained greyhounds were among the heat winners, Farmor Las Vegas and arch rivals Paw Licking and Ronan Izmir, who have filled the quinella in three Victorian country cups this year.

HEAT 1: Paw Licking (Kelvyn Greenough, VIC) in 25.77sec
HEAT 2: Hellyeah Bolt (Anthony Bullock, TAS) in 25.81sec
HEAT 3: Ronan Izmir (Jason Thompson, VIC) in 25.87sec
HEAT 4: Farmor Las Vegas (Robert Britton, VIC) in 25.78sec
HEAT 5: Black Magic Opal (Jason Thompson, VIC) in 25.65sec
HEAT 6: Sing The Song (Robert Grubb, TAS) in 25.97sec
