Dynamite demolition

Star staying prospect Captain Dynamite unleashed one of the best run home times ever seen over 595m at Sandown Park last night.

He began well to settle third early then showed great race sense to avoid contact with Jackson County leaving the straight the first time. As they passed the back split he took control of the race and bounded away to win by 8 lengths.

His winning time was a fast 34.02 but that wasn’t the most impressive part – he ran home in an unheard of time of 10.50.

To put that in context –

  • Hooked On Scotch ran home in 10.33 when he set the 515m track record
  • Dyna Double One ran home in 10.78 when setting his 33.63 track record
  • Bobby Boucheau ran 10.58 when setting his 595m track record and set the 715m track record soon after
  • Tornado Tears’ best run home time over 595m is 10.60

Just two races after Captain Dynamite’s win, powerhouse sprinter Nangar Rust – who recently broke 29 seconds in a trial over 515m – ran home in 10.58 covering 80 metres less!

His trainer Kel Greenough has long had a strong opinion on Captain Dynamite’s ability, but last night’s effort was one that impressed him.

“It’s great to see him run home as good as he did, there’s been some great stayers over the years and for him to be listed in that company is amazing. Funnily enough one of the closest run home times to that was by Bobby Boucheau who we obviously had some success with,” said Greenough.

The next question is when will ‘Rob’ step up to the staying trip?

“I like to give them about five runs over ‘600’ before stepping them up but unfortunately there’s not a lot of distance races on the calendar over a 650m or 680m leading into the Sandown Cup. I’m very happy with the way he’s pulled up so we could possibly do it sooner.”

He’s owned by a big group of Englishmen headed by David Mitchell (@DavidJMitch). They’re a part of a WhatsApp group with Greenough which lit up after last night’s win.

“It exploded, they can’t get enough of it they’re so keen. We’re in a time where a lot of people are down in spirit and it’s an experience like this that can perk them up.

“It does make it more enjoyable for us, their enthusiasm gets us excited. If we owned him ourselves we’d be happy with the run and get back to work but to share it with others is fantastic.”

The social media response to Captain Dynamite’s run was hot. As of this morning the replay has seen near 9000 views on Twitter and Facebook.
