More than 300 people attended today’s Adoption Day at the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club in Springvale, in what was yet another successful event for Victoria’s Greyhound Adoption Program.

A total of 32 of the 34 greyhounds available for adoption today found loving new homes and are set to spend the rest their days lapping up the attention and lazing on the couch.

Today’s event occurred just a few days after another outstanding GAP activation at the Royal Melbourne Show, where hundreds of thousands of people got to interact with the breed and learn all about why greyhounds make great pets.

GRV’s CEO Alan Clayton, who himself has a pet greyhound named Zoe, says it is predominantly the breed’s friendly and gentle nature that has made them such a popular pet option among Victorians.

“It is great to see more and more people choosing greyhounds as their family pet,” Mr Clayton said.

“We traditionally host an Adoption Day almost immediately after the Royal Melbourne Show, which works really well as greyhounds are fresh in people’s minds.”

The Pilkington family travelled from Werribee to adopt Phoenix today and they were eagerly awaiting to get her home.

“My brother adopted a greyhound from GAP at the start of the year and we just fell in love with the breed,” Kelly Pilkington said.

“We were instantly drawn to Phoenix. She has a very placid nature and her colouring is beautiful.”

GAP Adoption Days are held every 6–8 weeks across metropolitan and regional Victoria, while people can also make an appointment to meet some greyhounds with a view to adopting all year round at our Seymour and Baxter facilities.
