Sennachie set for Cup campaign

With just 100 days until the TAB Melbourne Cup, trainer Steve White and current Cup favourite Sennachie have their eyes firmly on the world’s greatest greyhound race.

A brilliant son of recent Victorian Hall of Fame inductee Fernando Bale, Sennachie is the $12 equal favourite with 2018 runner up Black Opium.

“He’s a really nice young dog,” said Steve White.

“He was always a dog that was going places from the time he hit the track in South Australia. Since he’s been over here he’s kept improving and keeps taking that next step.

“He took a massive step from when we went to Queensland (for the Brisbane Cup) and back here for the Maturity, winning both group 1s so he’s well on the way.”

Sennachie has greeted the starter on 22 occasions for 14 wins including his two group 1 triumphs and has already won over $488,000 in prize money, as well as eclipsing the Albion Park track record in his Brisbane Cup romp.

White is best known with his association with the former Queen of Sandown Park, Paua To Burn. She won two Sapphire Crowns and a Laurels at Sandown Park during her celebrated career, and also ran sixth in the 2005 TAB Melbourne Cup to provide White with his only Cup finalist. White is confident that Sennachie is the sort of dog that can win the country’s most prestigious event.

“To win the Melbourne Cup… it would be the pinnacle, all trainers strive to win the race.

“I’ve been lucky to have a greyhound make the final with Paua To Burn. Unfortunately it didn’t go right for her on the night, but this dog has all the right attributes to do well through the Cup so if he can make it through he’s always going to be a chance.”

Sennachie’s next assignment will be the Million Dollar Chase, followed by the Topgun before the heats of the TAB Melbourne Cup.

The $630,000 TAB Melbourne Cup will be run on Friday 29 November.
