War declared!

Waging War stamped himself as a dog to watch with an emphatic victory at Sandown Park last night.

The son of Golden Easter Egg winner Moriera put the writing on the wall with an impressive victory last Sunday, defying the inclement weather to win in 29.73. He again drew the red rug tonight and the punters didn’t miss, sending Waging War to the boxes the $1.10 favourite and provided those who took the short quote an easy watch.

Stepping cleanly from the rails draw, Waging War showed excellent acceleration and quickly put the result beyond doubt. He defeated Zipping Clifford by six lengths in 29.394, quick enough to move into sixth place on the leader board for the upcoming Speed Star match race series.

“He’s a nice young dog. A couple of nice box draws Sunday and today helped him big time but he needed a bit of luck too,” said winning trainer Glenn Rounds.

Whelped in September 2017, the 22 month old pup clearly has a bright future, and while Rounds is unsure where his immediate future lay, there’s no question he’ll be eyeing much bigger prizes later in the year.

“I haven’t thought of it to be honest (Waging War’s next assignment). I will have to think about it, I’m just very happy with what he’s doing what he’s doing at the moment and hopefully that leads into a very nice dog later in the year.”

Tonight’s win was his third win from five starts at Sandown Park and the fourth of his nine start career. He has been installed a $51 chance for November’s TAB Melbourne Cup, a race in which Rounds finished second with Chasin’ Crackers in 2017.

It was a good night for most punters with six favourites saluting on the card, including three from the powerful Jason Thompson kennel.

It was a good night for trainers in the City of Casey with Jason Thompson (Pearcedale) Glenn Rounds (Devon Meadows), Tony Cortese (Hampton Park), Peter Presutto (Devon Meadows) and Steve Collins (Pearcedale) combining for eight winners.
