HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE: ARVO’S JUNIOR
CATEGORY: RACING GREYHOUND

Former champion stayer Arvo’s Junior has been inducted into GRV’s Hall of Fame at the 2017/18 Victorian Greyhound Awards at Crown Palladium.

Bred and trained in Nyora by husband and wife team George and Kali Arvanitis, Arvo’s Junior started his career in 2002 and initially made a name for himself as a sprinter, making several feature finals including a 2nd placing in the Group 1 Silver Chief Classic (525m) at The Meadows.

However, it was over the longer distances that he truly excelled, clearly becoming Australia’s premier stayer during 2003 and 2004.

Kali Arvanitis said he was Arvo’s Junior was the perfect package.

“He had ability, he had personality, the (right) temperament…and he was never stressed out. He was always relaxed even when we were flying him from state to state. He loved to win and he loved to be on that podium,” she said.

Kali and George’s daughter, Alicia Arvanitis-Tye, said Arvo’s Junior was born with a confidence about him.

“From when he was a pup he was such a spunky, cheeky and arrogant dog. And when he was racing you didn’t have to do much with him…he just did his thing,” Alicia said.

In a career spanning 93 starts, the home-bred son of Arvo’s Express and Arvo’s Alarm contested 20 Group finals, winning seven of them, with the pinnacle being his victory in the Group 1 Sandown Cup.
