To The Healesville Cup for youngster Peter Galo

It was no surprise to Devon Meadows trainer Garry Selkrig when his greyhound Peter Galo (pictured with trainer Garry Selkrig. Photo credits Jason Mckeown Photography) claimed victory in the GRV Vic Bred series Madien final at Healesville on Sunday.

Starting as joint $3.40 favourite with He’s Supreme, Peter Galo jumped from box seven and showed the speed of his father Peter Rocket to claim the $7,500 first prize.

“The win didn’t shock me at all, he is a smart young dog and I think the sky is the limit with him,” trainer Garry Selkrig said.

Now a winner of two races from three starts, which have spanned across the GRV Vic Bred Maiden series Selkrig believes that his youngster has the breeding to continue to reach new highs up the straight and around circle tracks.

“He isn’t just a dog that can compete at Healesville, he will go well on the circle tracks too.”

Selkrig likes to start his young dogs out at Healesville because he likes the country atmosphere and believes it is a great way to ease a dog into the racing program.

Peter Galo is a son of Peter Rocket and Flossy – a full brother to Stagger who when onto have 137 starts for 64 wins and 38 minor placings.

Not even an overseas trip could stop owner Mark Burgin from watching his next star in the Maiden series at Healesville.

Burgin is no stranger to success on the race track owning To The Galo’s who has had 101 starts for 35 wins and 32 minor placings, amassing more than $180,000 in prize money and counting.

It was a matter of luck that Burgin ended up with Peter Galo, after picking another black dog in the litter initially, who has been retired to the GAP program, a companion was required which happened to grown up into Peter Galo.

To The Galo’s and Peter Galo share the same mother, Flossy, who has had five litters.

With Peter Galo’s success at Healesville over the past three weeks, Selkrig is planning to take aim at the 2017 Healesville Cup in September.
