Fast5 – RSN927 Sandown Cup night!

RSN927 Sandown Cup night has evolved into one of the country’s premier nights of greyhound racing, with the country’s best chasers vying for three group 1 titles. Here’s five factoids to help you sound smart with your friends and hopefully help steer you into a finding a winner!

1. GOAT?
A win in tonight’s RSN927 Sandown Cup would make Fanta Bale the first greyhound to win a group 1 over all three metropolitan distances. The $175,000 first prize would take her past Miata ($715,000) and into 5th place all time. It’d be her fourth group 1 which is phenomenal in its own right, but when you consider she doesn’t turn three until August there are still a lot good races ahead of her. There is a good case that she could already lay claim to being the best all-round bitch to ever race. Her trainer Rob Britton spoke to Michael Felgate on RSN’s Racing Pulse on Wednesday morning.

2. Elsa’s tilt at history
Since the year 2000, no greyhound has made the final of the RSN927 Sandown Cup with fewer than nine starts, and no winner had had fewer than 23. Midnight Elsa will line up at start six in tonight’s feature which is a remarkable effort, even more so when one considers a nomination mix up nearly had her home in the kennel.

3. The red – advantage or hoodoo
RSN927 Sandown Cup favourite Burn One Down has drawn the red box for just second time in 39 starts (excluding two handicap starts in which he started from 6m and 5m, winning both). Five of the six Sandown Cups run between 1995 and 2000 came from box 1, but none in the 15 Cups since.

It certainly hasn’t deterred the punters. Burn One Down is set to start as the favourite for the 23rd consecutive start (he’s has a 17-2-1 record in his last 22 starts at an average starting price of $1.44), and if remains odds-on it will be the 34th time he has done so in 42 career starts.

4. I’ve seen you before
It’s been described as being like ‘Federer vs Nadal’! Up Hill Jill and Striker Light meet for the seventh time on track and for the sixth time in a group final in the group 1 Sapphire Crown tonight. Striker Light leads the head-to-head 4-2 (including two group 1 wins), but their last time out at Sandown Park saw Up Hill Jill salute in the final of the group 2 Laurels last December. Incidentally, Fanta Bale ran third in the Laurels final.

5. Because it’s RSN927Sandown Cup night…
… it’d be wrong of us not to reflect on the great Bold Trease! He won the race four times in a row from 1986-1989, and as an interesting paw note, came back the next year and ran third in his heat, missing a fifth final by a length despite being first up for seven months! Check out his final race here (he jumps from box 7).

In fact, repeat winners isn’t uncommon in the Sandown Cup – Paul’s Thunder (1970-71), Lizrene (1972-73), Irma Bale (2012-13) and Sweet It Is (2014-15) are all multiple winners of the race.
