Burn One Down turned in one of the runs of the year in last week’s group 3 Racecallers (595m), coming from last to land the $25,000 first prize in his first race start in 10 weeks. Following the race, trainer Seona Thompson was non-committal about her plans for the group 1 Zoom Top winner, however after pulling up well from his phenomenal win, he will take his place in the heats of the world’s richest race for stayers.

Burn One Down comes from last to win the group 3 Racecallers (595m)

Burn One Down is one of five group 1 winners competing in the RSN Sandown Cup heats. Three-time group 1 winner and reigning Sandown Greyhound of the Year Dundee Osprey, which won the group 1 Harrison-Dawson over 515m at the corresponding meeting last year, headlines the opening heat alongside Perth Galaxy winner Bogie Bekim. Fanta Bale, also a three time group 1 winner, was an unlucky second behind Burn One Down last Thursday night and will jump from box 1 in second heat, while Burn One Down’s kennelmate Trip To Eden will line up in the last of the four heats.

Also on Thursday night will be the heats of the group 1 sprint events the Harrison-Dawson (male greyhounds) and the Sapphire Crown (female greyhounds). Notable runners in the Harrison-Dawson include Aston Dee Bee, Unlawful Entry, Bewlidering, Jimmy Newob, Black Mumbo and Aqua Cheetah, while group race winners Striker Light, Shima Song, Suffragette, Mumma Josie, Up Hill Jill, Fabregal and Dawn Mini will contest the Sapphire Crown.

In all, 23 individual group race winners will line up across the 11 group 1 heats. Combined, the runners have recorded 1112 race wins and almost $8m in prize money.

The first two in each heat (plus the two fastest thirds in the Harrison-Dawson) will progress to their respective finals on Thursday 25 May. The box draw for all three group 1 finals will be conducted live on RSN927 from 11am on Saturday 20 May.

TAB is projecting $15,000 First Four pools on every race on Thursday night. Click here for details.
