Family’s loss has emotions running high

A win by Almani Elite in Thursday’s Launching Pad Consolation final will mean much more than the $15,000 first prize for connections after the recent passing of syndicate member Alf Cartechini.

Emotions ran high for the members and friends of the Glass Cutters Syndicate as they watched on trackside as Almani Elite pinged to the front from box 5 to lead all of the way to score in an impressive 29.45.

“Unfortunately Alf lost his battle with cancer last Tuesday so it was an emotional night for us,” said Nick Kosky, part-owner and trainer of Almani Elite.

“That Almani Elite won didn’t surprise me at all. He’s been running around that time in trials so it was exactly what I expected him to do. It was a special win given the circumstances.”

Kosky, a 30 year old glacier from Cranbourne, got involved in the sport around three years ago after a group of mates enjoyed a run of success with Balarat Cup winner Maverick Tiger.

“I was working with Mark (a member of the syndicate) at the time and riding the thrill of it all with him, that motivated me to get involved.

“Alf had dogs years ago so we all thought we’d buy some. We decided to train them ourselves – I wouldn’t have it any other way. It was only about six months between me owning my first greyhound and training, it was a quick transition.

“I live on half an acre – having the Cranbourne track and facilities so close by is an advantage. I’d love to train full time, I couldn’t think of anything better.”

Almani Elite has drawn box 5 in the Launching Pad Consolation final and Kosky is confident of his chances.

“It’s going to be a tough race, early speed is going to be vital. He’s broken 5 seconds to the first split in trials and if he can repeat that he will be very hard to beat.

“It would mean a bloody hell of a lot to win for all of us. It was good to get the win last week but this week would be even better.”

The race will be run at 8:28pm on Thursday night, click here for fields and form.
