Hundreds flock to Sandown, adopt 30 greyhounds in two hours!

A new single day record  for Melbourne was achieved on Saturday with 30 greyhounds adopted out by Victoria’s Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP).

More than 100 families, couples and singles attended the two-hour event at Sandown Park, where 36 greyhounds were available for adoption having spent time adapting from professional racing athlete to ideal pet through GAP’s extensive foster care program. The six greyhounds not adopted on the day have returned to GAP headquarters in Seymour, where they will remain until they are adopted out.

The Greyhound Adoption Program hosts Adoption Days in Melbourne about every six weeks, providing opportunities to adopt greyhounds ready on the day, and the chance for people to interact with greyhounds and learn more about this magnificent breed.

Greyhounds are one of the most placid and adaptable canine breeds, suited to living with families, the elderly and in inner-city apartments.

Victoria’s Greyhound Adoption Program, which has adopted out well over 6,100 greyhounds since it began 20 years ago, remains on target to surpass its record 847 adoptions in a 12 month period, which was achieved in 2015.

Only once before have more greyhounds been adopted out in Victoria in a single day, that being at an Adoption Day at GAP headquarters in Seymour last October.
