Record Month for Greyhound Adoption Program

– Single-month record 105 adoptions

– GAP initiatives proving popular as more greyhounds find more homes

– Year-on-year record set to be broken

Lazy, docile and placid aren’t usually character traits associated with bringing up a ton but they’re the exact qualities that led to a record 105 greyhounds being adopted in April from the Victorian Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP).

105 is a record number of adoptions for a single month for the program. Greyhounds were adopted into homes across the width and breadth of Victoria with lazy pooches now occupying a couch in regional locations like Echuca, Warragul and Clyde as well as suburban areas such as Northcote, Kew and Brighton East. There was a true cross-section of society that fell in love with greyhounds throughout April.

Program manager, Larissa Darragh, attributes the record month to the ongoing education of the public about the greyhound’s suitability as a family pet and also to new initiatives that bring greyhounds to the people.

“Everyone involved in this program has been working so hard to make it as easy as possible for people to adopt a greyhound,” Ms Darragh said.

“We have introduced the concept of ‘Adoption Days’ and in April we also equalled our record number of single-day adoptions at one of the days held at The Meadows with 24 greyhounds finding homes.

“Having so many people embracing greyhounds as a breed is so heart-warming, we have known for a long time how amazing greyhounds are and now everyone else is starting to see it too.

“Last year we significantly broke the number of adoptions in a year with a record 536 greyhounds finding new homes through the program. This year we are expecting to surpass that number and set a record yet again which is an amazing achievement.”

A number of factors have contributed to the increase in adoptions. GAP has streamlined its intake model making it easier for owners and trainers to put their greyhounds into the program. Also, the major redevelopment of the Seymour HQ has been completed, the continual increase in popularity of the program’s Facebook page and the ‘Adoption Days’ are among the contributing factors that have grown the program.

Recently, it was announced that GAP will start conducting adoptions from the kennels at the Baxter Boarding Kennels to make it easier for people in Melbourne’s South-East to adopt a greyhound.
