Big Sam in Super Sprint showdown

Feature greyhound racing heads to the straight track at Healesville on Sunday with the Super Sprint Series Final (300m).

The fastest heat winner Outta My Depth (Ashlee Terry) is part of a hot young litter which includes My American Girl and Nervous An Weird, winners of the recent Group 3 SA Oaks and Derby respectively.

While Outta My Depth is rated a $1.80 favourite by The Watchdog, the expert form analyst is tipping Big Sam Marjen ($4) to win.

However, Big Sam Marjen’s trainer David Jensen says Outta My Depth is undoubtedly the greyhound to beat.

“Outta My Depth is part of a great litter with some very fast dogs, and he likes to rail so he should get a clear run from box two. However, Big Sam Marjen is drawn pretty well himself in box five because he likes to race in the centre of the track,” Jensen said. “He’s a big dog (36kg) with a massive stride and if he gets a clear run it should hopefully be a close contest.”

Big Sam Marjen is also part of a successful litter, four of which are trained by Jensen – Big Flash Marjen, Princess Marjen and Sideshow Marjen, the latter being scratched from Sunday’s final.

The quartet has put together a huge six months for Jensen, combining for 19 wins and 18 placings from just 45 starts.
Sunday’s final is scheduled for 1.30pm.
