Sporting stars start their engines for Pancake

Not many greyhound owners get around faster than their dogs, but when you’re the pride and joy of a syndicate of V8 Supercar drivers, you’ve got some high standards to live up to.

After winning his debut at Sandown last week, Pancake had a bit of a following at his follow-up race at Cranbourne on Wednesday night, with three of his owners – V8 stars Jack Perkins, Taz Douglas and James Moffat watching on from the crowd.

Starting out as favourite, a strong start from box eight had Pancake in a commanding position until Empress Rose finished strongly to take out race 7, with Pancake finishing second.

While disappointed not to get the win, the high-profile syndicate that also includes Holden’s Lee Holdsworth, thoroughly enjoyed the action and look set to embark on an enjoyable journey with the talented 19 month old.

And as for the name that surprisingly doesn’t have any reference to cars? It all stems from a running joke when the group pondered hiring a fishing charter for Moffat’s bucks party despite some seemingly rough seas.

After being reassured by the boat hire company that the water was as flat as a pancake, the group boarded only for each member to be violently seasick soon after.

Let’s hope the bond of racing greyhound ownership is a little more pleasant for them.
