Definitely not an outside chance

While the frequent flyer points are building, so is Queenslander Outside Pass’ chance of a Victorian group race victory.

After a gallant second in the Group Two winner-takes-all Shootout at Sandown Park last Friday night, trainer Tony Apap has been continually impressed with Outside Pass’ run each time he watches the replay.

“After watching the replay I saw what she had to overcome in the race, I think she did the hard yards and that’s all you can ask for,” trainer Tony Apap explained.

With the Shootout done and dusted, Sandown are moving onto their biggest event of the year – the Group One Melbourne Cup.

With over $900,000 on offer in the Melbourne Cup Series, Outside Pass lines up with an extra run at Sandown under her belt in the seventh heat from box one.

Although an outside pass was what Apap wanted for his star chaser, he concedes the inside draw may end up working in their favour.

“I am told Mincin’ Machine (box two) likes to use a bit of the track, which should then give Outside Pass plenty of room on the rail. Saying that, like all group races the field is full of talent especially Shima Song who has shown she can lead a field.”

The youngest in the field of eight, Outside Pass is also one of the most inexperienced greyhounds in the field (34 starts for 14 wins and eight minor placings) behind Jason Thompson’s Aeroplane Tommy who has had just 30 starts for 11 wins and 10 placings.

Although Outside Pass is yet to record a group victory after five attempts she is getting closer as she matures with age and gains experience at race tracks around Australia.
“It’s a very exciting time for me and it’s great to have a dog of her ability.”
