Metro Wrap: Staying Flash

The four metro meetings over the past week produced some very exciting racing and I’ve sat down to assess those exact four meetings.

The metro week of racing began at The Meadows on Wednesday. The potential future stars of the sport went around in seven heats of the GRV VBIS maiden series. The performance of Destini Wildfire highlighted the meeting with a slick 30.18 win with a powerful run home of 12.10 (Replay).

It seems that the Rinaldi team may just have another star in their kennel after the likes of General Destini and Destini Fireball have recently retired to stud duties. American import Greys Destiny – the dam of all three greyhounds – is pictured above.

Sandown Park’s Thursday night meeting was a terrific card with races over all three distances.

Early in the night I thought the run of City Rambler was good after lobbing into a surprise early lead. Noted for its strength, the John Carr prepared rising stayer swept away to a five length win in a smart 34.20 (Replay).

Gangnam Style danced his way to victory after finishing too well in the first of the staying heats over the 715m. Better known as a 600m dog, he stepped up to the 715m with great stamina to overhaul a handy field of chasers in 42.22 (Replay).

Seeking Justice was the run of the night for mine and as he proved he can mix it with the best with his superb sub 42 second win in the seventh of the night. After positioning up on the speed, he charged away off the back straight to record a 41.94 win in the third heat for the stayers (Replay).

The Meadows conducted its usual twelve classy races on Saturday night and Shanlyn Lucy kicked punters off on the right note. Usually a super strong stayer, she mixed her pattern up after showing good early speed. She took control of the race early and was left exposed in the lead a long way from home. After establishing a nice break on her rivals mid race she was able to stave a late charge of Beks in 42.58 off the handicap mark (Replay).

Sulzanti shook any concerns we had on this boom young pup after he showed tremendous early pace in the restricted win final. Drawn ideally out wide, the Brooke Ennis prepared youngster carved into the early lead running 5.13 and 17.82 on the way to his best of the night 29.95 performance.

The only other winner to break the magical 30 second mark at The Meadows on Saturday night was Amaro Bale, who did it oh so narrowly with a 29.999 win (Replay).

The Sunday Sandown Park meeting brought down the curtain on the week of metropolitan greyhound racing.

Some of the highlights included the smart 595m win of Allen Oregon, who defeated two group race finalists on the way to his 34.23 win (Replay).

Fever Pitch bounced back to his best with a super speedy 29.30 win over the 515m after bouncing into the early lead (Replay).

Kraken Flash closed out the real impressive wins on Sunday with a last to first win courtesy of a nice run around the first bend. He produced an incredible run home time of 10.66 over the 595m, which now asserts himself as a potential staying star if all goes to plan for this promising pup (Replay).
