Borg Quinella Kicks Off Massive Weekend of Group Racing

While Sunday’s Group 2 Shepparton Cup is currently the big ticket item in Victorian greyhound racing, there is a plethora of Victorian greyhounds contesting group races interstate this weekend.

It kicked off at Albion Park in Queensland on Thursday night, with Joe Borg enjoying one of his finest moments in greyhound racing as he trained the Quinella in the Group 3 Big Dog Cup (600m).

Ralphy Cinel claimed the $25,000 first prize, with Come On Fantasy the runner-up.

It was win number 14 for Ralphy Cinel in his 38th career start, and the $25,000 first prize took his career earnings up to $98,000.

Meanwhile, on Saturday night in Sydney, Wentworth Park is hosting the Group 1 National Futurity (520m) and Group 1 National Derby (520m), with each carrying total prize money in excess of $103,000.

Three Victorian greyhounds are in the males-only National Derby, the Andrea Dailly-trained trio of Lektra Outlaw, Dyna Tiber and Fernando Bale.

Dailly also has a strong hand in the Futurity, with four of her greyhounds occupying boxes one through to four, namely Spring Leaf, Polly Bale, Dyna Nico and Kerrigan Bale.

A fifth Victorian greyhound, Weblec Belle, will also contest the Futurity.

Victorian greyhounds Star Recall (Jeff Britton), pictured, and My Bro Fabio (Brooke Ennis) are among the main chances in the $140,000 to-the-winner Perth Cup, while two other Vics, Whodat Knockin’ and Xtreme Knocka, both trained by Jason Thompson, are also in the race.

Space Star (Robert Britton) and Lady Toy (Brooke Ennis) should both figure prominently in the Galaxy, while other Vics in the race are Starc (Andrea Dailly) and Blinker’s On (Brooke Ennis).

The brilliant Dyna Double One (Andrea Dailly) has come up with Box 1 in the Perth Cup Consolation (530m), while TAB Melbourne Cup finalist Cosmic Wise (Jeff Britton) is also in the race.
