Britton’s Laurels High-Five Part of an Amazing 10

It was a high-five for Jeff Britton at Sandown Park yesterday as he achieved the remarkable feat of winning five heats of the Group 2 Macro Meats Laurels.

Oakvale Destiny, Mepunga Mia, Mepunga Treasure, Weblec Belle and Cosmic Owl all won their way into the semi-finals of the Laurels providing the veteran trainer with a memorable day.

“I’d have to say that is up there with the best days I’ve had in greyhound racing,” Britton said.

“I was hoping for a good day because I had good dogs in but wasn’t expecting it to be that good.”

Britton won five of the eight heats but qualified 10 out of his 11 starters for the semi-finals. The only greyhound that missed out was Group 1 Maturity Classic winner, Mepunga Hayley.

It has been a whirlwind year for Britton having experienced some of the best results in his career.

“This year I’ve had some fantastic days – the biggest was probably on the night of the Maturity where Mepunga Tiara won a group two and Mepunga Hayley won the group 1.”

The experienced trainer says there’s no real secret to his success and that his good run can be attributed to a number of factors.

“I’m lucky to have really good female greyhounds in the kennel at the moment and this race is perfect for them.

“Also, Barry Smith (breeder of the Mepunga line) is sending down some top quality greyhounds at the moment too which really helps.

“In addition to that I have great help from Angela (Langton) and also the staff that work at the kennel. They do so much work for us and we really appreciate their help.”

Britton believes that Oakvale Destiny is the class greyhound of the bunch because of her field smarts and thinks that Mepunga Mia has the best chance to win the whole series because she has so much early speed.

The semi-finals of the Laurels will be run this coming Sunday at Sandown Park with the final to be held the following Sunday.
