Breeders, Buyers Go Home Happy

It was billed as the best Ready 2 Race Sales yet, but only time will tell if that is the case.

The 100+ greyhounds trialled in four-dog fields on Saturday morning before going to auction that afternoon, with a handful fetching more than $20,000, including a top price of $25,000.

There were plenty of experts and novices among the estimated 700 strong crowd, including many first time buyers.

Among the many ‘in the know’ were elite trainers Robert Britton and Darren McDonald, as well as top breeders such as Carl McGrath, and Paul Bartolo.

“It’s been a great day,” Bartolo said. “I’ll be back with more dogs to sell next year.”

Leading Western Australian trainer Linda Britton was also in attendance, fresh from racing her super sprinter Star Recall in the $600,000 Group 1 TAB Melbourne Cup the night before.

Who knows, maybe the 2015 Melbourne Cup winner was sold today.

MC James Van de Maat said of the day: “Sale prices appear to be more realistic across the board to me than in the first two years of the Ready 2 Race Sales. The majority of breeders and buyers will go home very happy today, so it’s a win-win and a great platform to build on for 2015.”

Crocmedia identities Craig Hutchison, Dr. Turf and Liam Pickering came along for the second year running, with McGrath buying three greyhounds on their behalf for 30 quiz competition winners on their Off The Bench radio show in 2014.

A full list of sale prices will be available at grv.org.au on Tuesday.
