‘Class of 2014 Runs Deeper’: Bob Douglas

Interest in Greyhound Racing Victoria’s Ready 2 Race Sales is growing by the day since the recent release of the 2014 catalogue.

This year’s auction will again be run at Bendigo – on Saturday 22 November – and it has reached capacity for the first time in its three year history with 148 greyhounds for sale.

Bendigo GRA President Bob Douglas, pictured above (bottom left) at the 2012 Ready 2 Race Sales, is predicting this year’s crop to reach a new level of success.

“Having had a look at the catalogue there appears to be a lot more depth than previous years in terms of the quality of greyhounds bred, and the number of well-respected breeders who have nominated their pups for the series.”

“In saying that, just because a greyhound is well bred doesn’t guarantee it will be able to run, but the catalogue gives people the chance to identify well bred pups and then, if those pups show that they have ability when they race through the series, people can bid for them with confidence.”

The Ready 2 Race Sales are designed to create a simple pathway for people – including first-time owners – to purchase young greyhounds who are at or near the beginning of their racing careers, which Douglas strongly endorses.

“The beauty of greyhound racing in Victoria these days is that there are races for just about any dog, and a lot of people just want to see their very own dog race, whether it’s in the city or in lower country class (Tier 3).”

“They just want to get a picture on their wall of them with their greyhound winning a race somewhere, and there’ll be plenty of greyhounds come through the series that sell for around $5,000 or $6,000 that go on to win four or five races.”

“In the case of some greyhounds the races they win might just be Tier 3 races, but a lot of people don’t care about that. They just want to experience the thrill of having a winner,” Douglas said.
