‘Underdog’ is the People’s Choice

White Spyro is June’s People’s Choice for Most Popular Greyhound after receiving 40 per cent of votes ahead of Dewana Result and Xylia Allen.

Bred and trained in Altona Green by Craig Davis, White Spyro was nominated after winning the Wagga Gold Cup (525m) on 8 June, and since then she has run third in the Group 2 TAB Bendigo Cup (425m) and will line up in a semi-final of the Group 1 Hudson Pacific Maturity Classic (525m) at The Meadows on Saturday night.

Davis, a hobby trainer who trains from a normal sized house block in the Melbourne suburb of Altona Green in between running an orange orchard near Swan Hill, is thrilled with White Spyro’s growing popularity.

“In the last few weeks I’ve been amazed at how many people have taken an interest in her,” Davis said.

“When I’m at the racetrack people ask me how she’s going and they tell me I’m doing a good job with her, which is quite flattering.”

“Even when I take her to my regular vet in Bendigo people know who she is. I don’t even know half these people so it’s pretty surreal and a really nice feeling.”

Davis believes that a big reason behind White Spyro receiving the most votes is because she isn’t part of a big kennel.

“I’m a very inexperienced trainer and only train a couple of dogs, so I think people see her as a bit of an underdog,” he said.

“She shot into the limelight a bit in the Bendigo Cup when she led before coming third after being run down by Warrior King, who is a really strong dog. I was so proud of her.”

Looking ahead to Saturday night’s Maturity Classic semi-finals, Davis couldn’t be happier that White Spyro is drawn in Box 8.

“The pink (box) should suit her down to the ground. Out wide is exactly where she needs to be so she can avoid other dogs cramping her in. She ran second in her Maturity heat last Saturday after leading for a long way, and hopefully she can begin well again,” Davis said.

A top two finish on Saturday will see White Spyro make the $145,000 Hudson Pacific Maturity Classic final on 26 July.

White Spyro is now in the running to win the People’s Choice Most Popular Greyhound for 2014.
