Renegade Chief took out the first feature of the year when winning the Group 1 AJS Corporation Silver Chief (525m) at The Meadows on Saturday night.

The Kel Greenough-trained and Tony Lockett-owned greyhound was sent to the boxes as a $4.30 third favourite behind Jason Thompson’s Proven Nitro $2.60 and Mark Delbridge’s Allen Makoto $3.20.

The race saw Proven Nitro (Box 6) miss the start as Allen Makoto (Box 8) flew to lead with Renegade Chief (Box 2) just behind.

Entering the first turn Proven Nitro was bumped to the back of the field while Allen Makoto streaked away in front with Renegade Chief looming ominously in second.

Rounding the final bend Renegade Chief turned up the heat as he sped to lead and tore away to win the $100,000 first-prize with Allen Makoto second and Gold Town third.

After the race, trainer Kel Greenough was full of thanks to his family.

“I’m very appreciative to Jackie (wife) and Angie (daughter), they put in so much work at home with the dogs [ends] it’s a real team effort and this is a big thrill,”  Greenough said.

Renegade Chief’s career record stands at 19 starts for 13 wins four seconds and two thirds, with his career stakes now $155,000.
