STAGGERING UPSET

Garry Selkrig was the happiest man in greyhound racing on Wednesday night after his boom sprinter Stagger [$11.40] won the Group 2 Warragul Cup.

“I don’t care if I don’t win another race. This will pay off the mortgage,” the Devon Meadows trainer annnounced after Stagger claimed the $40,000 first prize.

Settling midfield, Stagger stormed home to pinch the lead from the Graeme Bate-trained Classy Maldini late in the race and clock the slick time of 25.59sec.

The win was Selkrig’s first at group level after a lifetime in the sport.

A son of Primo Uno and Instructed First, the consistent Stagger took his career record to 15 wins and 15 placings from 38 starts.

Classy Maldini finished second with the Greg Tatti-trained Black Saharrah third.
