Nearly 100 local community groups shared in $44,000 in prize winnings during the 2016 TAB Great Chase Community Event while enjoying a great day out at the races. The groups, who work with the elderly and the intellectually and physically disabled, all took part in a series of Great Chase Community Days held at 10 greyhound racing clubs across Victoria over the past two months, culminating in the Great Chase Grand Final at the Meadows on 19 October.
“We had a great time at the Bendigo Great Chase Community Day, met a recently adopted greyhound and it was very good to catch up with other local groups. Our winnings from the Great Chase will go towards planning more social events for our members and their carers.” – Bendigo Headway.
Since 2003, the annual Great Chase Community Days have raised over $500,000 and provided race day action and excitement for hundreds of community groups and thousands of their clients around Victoria.
How it works
Victoria’s greyhound racing clubs each dedicate one race meeting in the TAB Great Chase Race Series to their local community groups. The groups are matched with greyhounds running on the day for the opportunity to share in a $2000 prize pool.
Everyone taking part gets to cheer on and meet the greyhounds running for them, to say hello to dogs up for adoption through GRV’s Greyhound Adoption Program and to meet, mingle and enjoy entertainment, games, lunches and gift packs.
“It’s a lovely day out and we really enjoy following the greyhound we’ve drawn, Unlawful Entry. The money he’s raising for us is going towards a new disabled amenities block at our stables.” - Riding Develops Ability – Oaklands Junction.
All the groups are then invited to the TAB Great Chase Grand Final to go into the draw and be matched to one of the eight dogs running in the Final – held this year on Wednesday 19th October at the Meadows Greyhound Racing Club in Melbourne from 11am.
The community group that draws the winning greyhound wins $10,000 and the other seven groups each win $2000 while everyone enjoys a fun filled day at the Meadows.
