  How_to_become_a_Trainer

Becoming a greyhound trainer can be both financially and emotionally rewarding. Confirming your ultimate decision to become a trainer will require a little research. We recommend that prior to making any decisions on greyhound training, you familiarise yourself with the information contained in the Trainer's Information Booklets, along with the greyhound racing rule book and grading guidelines.

It would also be advisable to talk to any trainers that you already know who may give you an indication of the time and resource commitments needed to become a successful trainer.  Training greyhounds is a seven day a week commitment!

If you are not sure, you may want to consider becoming an Attendant (someone who handles a greyhound at race meetings for someone else) first.  For more information on becoming an attendant - Click Here.

When deciding to become a greyhound trainer you will enter into an industry that is passionate about the sport of greyhound racing and even more passionate about the elite animal itself. The process involved in becoming a greyhound trainer while being relatively simple is designed to ensure that the people entering our industry are doing so with the right intentions and have the welfare of the greyhound at heart at all times.

Once your trainer application has been successfully processed you will receive your member card immediately, while a copy of 'The Adviser' (12 editions per annum) will be mailed to you each month.

There are two different Trainer's Qualifications available to you:

Option 1: Owner Trainer (Competency level 2)

As an 'Owner Trainer', you will be entitled to train any greyhound that is owned/part owned by yourself, or for an owner that permanently resides at your address.

Steps involved with becoming an Owner/ Trainer
1.

Read BOTH 'Level 1-Attendant' & 'Level 2-Owner Trainer' Information booklets.

 2.
You will then have to answer the question sheets for both levels.  A practical assessment will need to be completed and signed off by GRV stewards at your local track.
3.  Complete an application form to become an Owner/Trainer
4.  Complete a tax compliance form
5.  Submit all of the above forms along with your registration fee and passport photograph to the GRV office

Option 2: Public Trainer (Competency level 3)

As a public trainer, you will be entitled to train any greyhound that either owned by yourself, or any other registered owner.

To become a public trainer, you need to complete all of the requirements for an Owner Trainer along with the added requirement of sucessful completion of 'Level 3 - Public Trainer '

Steps involved with becoming a Public Trainer
1.

Read ALL THREE  Trainer's Information Booklets - 'Level 1-Attendant', 'Level 2-Owner Trainer' & 'Level 3 - Public Trainer'.

2.
You will then have to answer the question sheets for ALL THREE levels.  A practical assessment will need to be completed and signed off by GRV stewards at your local track.
**Note: If you are already registered as an Owner Trainer, you only have to complete the Level 3 Questions to upgrade your license

3.  Complete an application form to become a Public Trainer
4.  Complete a tax compliance form
5.  Submit all of the above forms along with your registration fee and passport photograph to the GRV office

Once you are registered as a Trainer with Greyhound Racing Victoria you are free to train and nominate your registered greyhound/s for any race meetings conducted by the Greyhound Industry Racing Authorities.
