Harold Matthews was the Chairman / Manager of the MGRA at the opening meeting at North Melbourne Football Ground (Arden Street) on October 7, 1957. He is arguably the MGRA's most famous Chairman, presiding over the club between 1956 and 1979. He was at the helm when they relocated to Swan Street in 1962 and underwent a number of major developments to the track and grandstand. He was a major player in the club attracting huge crowds to its annual events, the Australian Cup, Maturity Classic and Silver Chief, during the sport's halcyon days.
