Kantarn Bale burst on to the scene in late 1999 winning the Group 1 Melbourne Cup at only his ninth race start, a remarkable achievement. He contested an amazing 17 group finals during his illustrious career and is considered one of the most tenacious chasers to have graced the track. After being retired to stud in May 2001, he returned to the track some nine months later to win the 2002 Warrnambool Cup at the age of four years and two months, a win that his mentor Graeme Bate considers to be one of his finest as a trainer.
